Scrap the Big Launch, Fly a Kite: How to Create and Maintain Control of Smarter Mobile Apps with Real-Time UI Updates, A/B Testing, and Personalization

Ready or not, the rise of smartphones and tablets are forcing organizations off the mobile device sidelines.

A responsive website is good, but it's not enough. Users are spending more of their time in mobile apps. But too often, companies spend considerable time and resource into planning and designing an app that will most likely fail. In this session, we discuss how to create smarter mobile apps that respond to user behaviors, adapt to app successes and failures, and upturn the prevailing process.

Current Approach:

  1. Design
  2. Deploy and wait 1 week for App Store
  3. Cross your fingers
  4. Go to step 1

New Agile and Iterative Approach:

  1. Design
  2. Deploy and wait 1 week for App Store
  3. Monitor, optimize, personalize, re-design.
  4. Go to step 3

Key to this new approach is the technological capability to make in-app modifications that affect the UX but do not change the application code. This can be a challenge, particularly for native mobile apps that rely on low-level Objective C (for iOS) and Java (for Android) graphical window objects. We introduce MOBEX, a middleware library that enables apps to provide content and UX components that are controlled from a server. Empowered with this new capability, we discuss a new hybrid paradigm for mobile app development and control that allows real-time updates to the user interface, and provides a means of sophisticated and personalized content delivery based on streaming analytics.

In addition to discussing a new agile and iterative approach toward successful mobile app development, this session will demo MOBEX capabilities such as A/B testing, personalized content delivery, geo-fenced targeting, and UI updates all in real-time on a downloadable app from the App Store.
